Wildwater Moira River Race
The day after my adventure at Marmora Mackfest I was out raking the lawn, when I got a call from my wife who happened to be driving by Chisholm Mill on her way to visit a friend. She told me there were a boatload of, well… boats, at the mill and they looked about ready to hit the water. Despite how much fun I was having raking old grass out of my weed riddled lawn, I decided to pack up my camera and go check it out.
When I got to the mill, I realized that these folks were not part of Mackfest (who almost all had whitewater kayaks) and were not going to be pulling tricks in the rapids, but I thought I’d check out what they were doing anyway. I watched as the first few got their gear on and started bringing their boats down river along the shoreline to put in. It was clear there was no chance of getting a photo from here, so I got back in my car and headed downriver to Scuttlehole Road, knowing they’d be going by there.
While waiting for the first boat to come along, I was chatting with the other spectators (the only other two people there) and learned that this was actually a yearly race held by the local kayak and canoe club. I have to say it looked like a lot of fun, and made me want to get a boat even more! Although after our river tubing adventure in Vermont many moons ago, I don’t think I’d get my wife to come along.
I really enjoyed photographing these events this weekend, but I’m having trouble locating info on similar events. If anyone can help me out, I’d really love to catch some more paddling. Please contact me with info. Thanks!
