Kyle and Shannon’s Wedding at Elmhirst’s Resort

Whenever I tell somebody that I’m a photographer, one of the first question I usually get asked is “Oh, you must shoot weddings?” Well, up until recently the answer has been “No.” While, I do shoot family photos and various types of events, I haven’t ventured into the world of wedding photography until this summer when I had the opportunity to get my feet wet with a couple of smaller weddings, and by second shooting this wedding for Katelyn Elizabeth Photography.

It was an outdoor wedding in October at a resort near Peterborough. Of course when you’re planning anything outdoors in October, you never really know what you’re going to get. But aside from a few sprinkles of rain on the windshield during the drive up, it turned out to be a great day. To my surprise, the trees were still hanging on to some colourful leaves, and (to the wedding party’s surprise) I was really happy that the overcast skies stuck around and it didn’t rain on us.
When we arrived at the resort, we noticed all the guys were headed down to the dock to do some fishing so I headed down to meet them and grab a few shots of the groom’s last fishing trip as a single man (cue ominous music – OK, that might be a bit dramatic☺). After attempting to navigate the horrendous mess left by the gulls on the dock, I decided instead to stick to shooting from shore. Although I was pretty tempted to jump in the nearby water trike to get the shot, the likelihood of me going for an unintended swim was a little too high. I’m actually surprised I managed to keep from falling in the lake from the beach… I have a history of that kind of thing.

The fish were biting pretty fierce that day, so they pulled in a few pretty quickly (bass I think? I don’t know fish, but I’m pretty sure they were not goldfish or sharks). Then it was time to start getting ready for the day. It didn’t take long to see that these guys were quite the characters, especially the best man seen here helping the groom adjust his suspenders.

The guys told me about this plane, so we made our way over to get some photos with it in the background… or standing on it… whatever. It made for a cool photo! As we walking away, a guy in a pickup truck came driving down over the field and waved us down… uh-oh. We thought for sure we were going to be called out for being on the plane. As it turns out, it was actually the plane’s owners and they were super nice. They talked for a bit and told us the plane had just been used to shoot a music video for some country singer (not sure who… but pretty sure it was not Willie Nelson, or Johnny Cash). We tried talking them into taking us up for a shoot in the plane, but they weren’t that nice☺.

As you can see, these guys were naturals in front of the camera, which made my job a lot easier. Where the real work came in was in trying to get the ring bearer to co-operate. He was NOT happy about getting his picture taken, so it took a lot of coaxing, a few tears and several bribes from his mom of new Lego to get him to even stand in front of the camera. Good thing I happen to be a Lego aficionado and was able to distract him with some relevant conversation! He wanted so hard to be cranky, but having a son about his age, I had a few tricks up my sleeve to get him to crack a smile or two against his will.

All that picture taking took a lot out of the boys, so it was time to relax and play with some Lego for a while before the ceremony and while we waited for the ladies to get ready.

It was a little cool, as you’d expect in late October on the lake, but an amazing day nonetheless for an outdoor ceremony. I bet the bridesmaids wished they were wearing sweaters though! Either way, the ceremony went ahead outside as planned and included a few good laughs, a lot of smiles and a few tears.
