Belleville Roller Derby Team Photos
I’ve been looking for a good excuse to get a new studio strobe to add to my lighting kit. For anyone who knows me, spending that kind of cash on just about anything is hard for me to do :-). But when I picked up a couple of jobs requiring some lighting for portraits, I bit the bullet and placed the order. One of those jobs was shooting headshots for the Belleville Roller Derby team.
I was excited to get this gig because I figured it was the perfect opportunity for me to play with some fun lighting rather than a typical passport photo type portrait. I had a few different ideas on how to setup the lighting, and I tried them all in my basement before the shoot with myself as the model (don’t worry, nobody will ever see those shots!). In the end I came up with this four light setup. I placed one light on each side, one at the wall, and one right above the camera for fill.
I had been to the gym where theĀ team practices before, so I had some idea what to expect, although I didn’t know exactly where I was going to setup. As it turned out the best spot was up on the stage out of the way of the practice. At first I was just going to use the stage curtains for a backdrop, but when I opened them up I found this black wall, which worked out way better! It had some scrapes and scuffs, but I think that works for these shots and helps add some texture.
Unfortunately, not everyone on the team could make it, so I’m looking forward to heading back to shoot some more soon!
