As you may recall, a few months ago
I went to check out Belleville’s new roller derby team at a practice. At that time, they were just starting out and were working very hard toward getting ready for their first bout. Ever since, I’ve been meaning to go back and shoot some more photos with the full team present, but for one reason or another that just never happened. So, when I saw that they had scheduled their first bout I immediately emailed the team about getting access to shoot.
After a little warm up, gear inspection and team introductions, it was time to get down to business! I’ll spare you the play-by-play, so let’s just suffice it to say that they had a great game and it was a lot of fun to watch. Can’t wait to get out to see another game soon.
To save you from scrolling too much, I didn’t include all the photos on this blog. To see larger versions of these photos and additional photos not included here,

After taking a few test shots during practice, it was clear that I was going to have to push my camera to it’s limits to get some photos in the arena. Although there were lots of lights, without an ice surface down it was just too dark to get a decent exposure with a reasonable ISO and shutter speed. So, I used unreasonable ISO and shutter speeds :-). All of these shots were taken at ISO 3200, and a shutter speed in the neighbourhood of 1/800 sec and still the photos were underexposed. So I shot RAW knowing I couldn’t decrease the shutter speed any further and I’d need the wiggle room in post processing.

I also stuck around for the first half of the second game before hitting the road to get home at a reasonable hour (the game was in Ajax!). Here are some photos from the second match.
