Winter Sunrise on the Bay of Quinte
This winter it seems there have been a lot more dreary grey mornings than usual. Of course that could be all in my head. But every morning I wake up and look out my window to the south, then drive to work before the sun is up, where I can see the sunrise. I really don’t recall that many mornings that I kicked myself for heading out with my camera rather than go to work early.
Truth be told, I really haven’t been getting out to shoot like I should be. When the weather doesn’t co-operate, and you have to get your kid ready for school, and blah blah blah… excuse after excuse. I just haven’t been hauling my butt down to the bay like I used to. So when I wake up on a Saturday morning in January, and it’s 2°C, and I can see the makings of beauty sunrise from window I’m flat out of excuses.
When the sunrise is as fantastic as it was on this morning, it’s almost impossible to take a photo that wouldn’t grab peoples attention. After all, who can resist a photo of a colourful sunrise? But to me, it doesn’t matter how amazing the sky is if there’s no other point of interest in the photo. And that’s why I love shooting in winter. Although I’ve taken photos near these rocks a hundred times, the ice and snow add so much texture, colour, depth, and interest that I can always find a way to shoot that I’ve never seen before.
And it was warm enough that I didn’t freeze my fingers off in the process!
