Band Portraits

Over the past few months I’ve spent a lot of time photographing as many bands as I could get out to see. Music photography was something that I had been wanting to do for a long time, but like many things in life, I just kept putting it off for one reason or another. Finally I decided to set some goals for myself and just get out and shoot. It’s been a challenging and very rewarding experience. I’ve had the opportunity to see some amazing bands and meet some really great people (despite the fact that I’m terrible at meeting new people, but I’m working on it!)

Now it’s time to set some more goals. This time I’m really excited about doing some band portraits. As usual I’ve been putting this off, and life gets in the way. Photography is not my full time gig, so it is hard to find the time, but I need to start the wheels in motion. I’ll be starting small, and it will take time.
So, here’s the plan:
  1. Find a couple of bands to work with.
  2. Find some cool and unique locations to shoot (train tracks and brick walls need not apply).
  3. Take some incredible pictures.
Simple right? Well, maybe not so much. I have some big ideas and I’m really looking to produce some outstanding photos. Keep in mind I’ve never done this type of photo shoot before, and I bet your band hasn’t either so there will be some thinking on our feet and we’ll need to work together. Hey, we have to start somewhere right?

I’d love to be able to show you a portfolio of promo shots of other bands I’ve worked with and give you a detailed price list. But I don’t have one… yet. That’s where you come in. I’m looking for bands that are willing to work with me on this to help me build that portfolio in exchange for a free photo shoot and some kick ass images for your band. I’m confident we can get some extraordinary results.

Interested? Please read on.

Let’s get down to brass tacks here.
What your band will get:
  1. A FREE photo shoot. We’ll find a location(s), setup lighting and take photos of the band and individual members.
  2. A free high resolution image (or two?) of the band to use for print, web, promotional material, coffee mugs, pillow shams, CDs, whatever.
  3. A selection of  low resolution images for sharing on Facebook and your web site. Remember the part about the FREE photo shoot? You know nothing is really for free, so this is where you help me (and yourself) by posting and sharing the images for your friends to see your awesome band. I only ask that you provide a link to my website with the images (as per my licensing terms). These images will also be available for purchase in high resolution format as well, if you happen to have more pillows that need shamming.
Note that this is a limited time deal, and I’ll be choosing only a couple of bands to extend this offer to. I hope to get things organized in the next month or so. Spring is here so outdoor location scouting will be more feasible and we have more daylight in the evenings which is key. I’ve kinda been waiting for spring because I’d love be able to shoot outside, if that’s your thing.
One last thing. I’ve had a number of bands ask me if I provide this type of service, and how much it would cost. You know who you are, and you also know that I couldn’t really provide an answer. In the process of trying to come up with an answer this was the best thing I could think to do. I just couldn’t figure out how to take your money without knowing what I could provide you in return.
Still interested? If so I want to hear from you! Please send an email to dannysheppard@gmail.com with the following details by… oh… say April 15th:
  • Band details: Name, members, Facebook, Web Site, Reverbnation, Videos. You get the idea.
  • Some thoughts on where you’d like to do a photo shoot.
  • What you plan to do with the photos.
  • Boxers or briefs.
  • Any other info you might think relevant.
Please understand, I can only work with a couple of bands on this project. I don’t exactly know how I’ll choose, but please don’t be pissed if you’re not one of them! If all goes well, there will be more photo shoots in the near future!
