It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since the Barenaked Ladies released their first indie tape. I remember watching these guys on MuchMusic, performing in studio and of course their first video in Speakers Corner. I’ve been a fan ever since, but have never seen them perform live in concert. So when I had the chance to not only see them live, but also shoot the show I was ecstatic!

To me the Barenaked Ladies have always been a very intriguing mix of amazing songwriting, silliness and wacky performance. Personally, I always gravitated towards their more “serious” songs, but also really enjoyed the comedy and theatrics of their performances. Of course these days Stephen is no longer in the band, but the energy and comedy of the show was still there. Not quite what I remembered from those crazy performances on MuchMusic, but it was there. That is until the last song of the set, which was a medley of so many pop songs I can’t even remember (I do remember Wrecking Ball being in there somewhere) complete with choreography and mayhem. Just like way back when. Combined with their high energy rock songs and a set of acoustic tunes mid-set, this show did not disappoint. This is one group of seriously talented musicians.

During the second song of the set, Pinch Me, several pieces of ladies undergarments were thrown on stage when the lyric “I just made you say ‘underwear'” were sang. I guess that must be a thing at BNL shows? Either way, they promptly ended up hanging from Jim’s bass and from Kevin’s guitar. I’ve been trying to figure what was written in the cups of the bra… no luck so far.
As Jim was hanging the bra on Kevin’s guitar, I remember thinking “Jim! You’re going to throw his guitar out of tune man!”. That was probably just me.

I showed up early to shoot the opening act, and when I was brought out to the stage, I was expecting The Ladies Of The Canyon, who were supposed to be the opening band. Instead, out walked Clara Venice. I wasn’t sure what was going on, so I just started shooting. She played the theremin of all things! Along with a violin, and ukulele. Certainly not what I was expecting, but it was very cool.

After Clara’s first three songs, I left the stage and headed back to wait for The Barenaked Ladies to start playing. As I was chatting with the security guard I heard music coming from the arena and realized that The Ladies Of The Canyon had hit the stage, so I ran back in to shoot the second opening act of the night.
