Family Portraits Downtown

I almost forgot to post some pictures from this family shoot I did before Christmas!

For this particular shoot, the family wanted pictures with an ‘edgy’ feel to them and had some location ideas in mind. So I met them downtown and we headed out on foot in search of some interesting spots to shoot.

Because we were outside at mid-day for this shoot, I had no idea what to expect for light and I knew I would have to think on my feet to work with a wide range of potential lighting conditions. Luckily, it was overcast that day and we were mostly working in shady areas, so I threw a speedlight and a small umbrella on a light stand and we headed out. There was no wind, so at least I didn’t have to carry a sandbag. Although the wind did blow over my light once, but thanks to my photo/ninja skills I caught it before it smashed on the ground.

We ended up mostly shooting in two different locations. First in the entrance way to an old building and second in an alleyway just around the corner. The textures of the brick, the old painted wood, and rusty metal was exactly what we were looking for.
