Have A Heart Variety Show

My latest concert shoot was at a fundraiser for a local hospital foundation. It was a long night, but there was lots of great music and I had a chance to meet some new people.

It was another very challenging shoot. It was pretty dark, and the stage light was just random flashing colours, so it made it pretty difficult to nail down settings and get good light. Not to mention the ice machine, the front door behind the stage, the dartboard… well you get the idea. Challenging. So I relied pretty heavily on my instincts (and the six frames per second my camera can produce!) to catch the light, and struggled to find angles without too many distracting elements. In most cases it worked out and I’d get one that had decent light. I probably should have popped out my flash, but I thought I could get away without it, and I really try to avoid popping off that much flash in the bands faces if I can help it. I know I wouldn’t like that much.

When I got home and started sorting through the pictures, I found that the colours were just not great. On to plan B: Black & White. I started working on a few of the images and really liked the black & white a lot better.  Before I knew it, I had converted most of them so I figured I’d just make the whole set black & white. I also kept a pretty gritty look to the images, it just seemed appropriate for these images.

The lineup consisted of L4, Steve Pitico, The Dead Sparrows, Nonexistent, and Fingers X’d. You can check out their Facebook page links below. It was quite the spectrum of country meets metal.

Here’s some more of my favourite images from the night.
