Nancy’s Wedding Reception

I have shot lots of events in the past, but none as big or as important as my sister in-laws wedding reception. As I mentioned in my last post about the wedding, when I was asked to shoot the reception I jumped at the chance, but I’d be lying if I didn’t get a little stressed about it initially. I know Nancy really wanted some great photos of her day, and I wanted to make sure she was happy. No pressure.
There are no second chances for these types of events! Even though it started out a little stressful (I’ve been known to be somewhat of a worrier), things started flowing once I took the first couple of photos and started interacting with everyone, as they always do.
Sorry in advance for all the pictures of my son in this post. But he was literally everywhere at once and he brought the party that night.

It was a long day, which started out with me taking photos of the bride and bridesmaids getting ready with makeup, hair etc., then I had to rush to the ceremony. I was actually in such a rush that I almost went to the reception hall by accident, but I made it. Which is a good thing because I had my sons (who was the ring bearer) tuxedo in the car! So after posing for a few photos (for the record, I’m much more comfortable behind the camera) I took my son back to rest up for the night ahead and change into something a little more comfortable :-).

Luckily Aunt Nancy had the foresight to leave some colouring and toys in a gift bag for the only four year old in attendance. So to keep occupied he coloured some awesome pictures of Ironman and The Hulk for his new uncle, who just happens to be a total comic geek. It was a win win win.

If you recall from my last post about the decorations there was a Sundae Bar for desert. I think this look says it all. Yeah, it was that good. Once everyone had their fill, it was time for speeches and some entertainment (from the bride herself no less!), cake cutting etc.

Before the dancing started, everyone headed outside to cool off (did I mention this was October in Newfoundland?) and to take some photos. Including the first photo in this post and the one above.

This photo was a little tricky. It was dark, there was a nearby dirt road, a red building in the background and it was lit by streetlights. So I setup my camera on my tripod and told them to stay really still while I took a several second exposure. Then all it took was a little creative cropping, a conversion to black and white and a small amount of grounds keeping in Photoshop to get rid of the road :-).

Then it was back inside to get the real party started. At first I thought this was the end of my night. It was getting late and my son was getting tired and cranky. Although he had spent months working on his dance moves for the wedding (seriously… months. And he has some pretty sick moves) he would not dance. As it turns out he didn’t like the music, and it was too loud. Both valid arguments. So we gave him some earplugs and an ultimatum: dance or go home. As you can see he picked the former and then some. He danced until almost 2 am, and even then I had to pull him off the dance floor.

Good times were had by all, and I got to stay to document the whole thing! Except the cleanup… bonus!

I didn’t want to get all static “deer in the headlights” photos of the dancing, so I used a slower shutter speed to show some movement in the background and let the flash do it’s thing to freeze the action I wanted frozen… like this amazing photobomb.

I think you can tell from the photos that everyone had a great time and I’d like to thank everyone for being such awesome sports and allowing me to take their photos and pop a flash in their faces all night :-). I’d especially like to thank Nancy and Steve for giving me the opportunity to capture these moments, I had a great time!
