The ‘Vette

“Remember my Vette? Corvette. Stingray. 454 four barrel, superglide transmission. Mag wheels on to her, tornado tires, dingly balls all around the windshield. Remember?”

– Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers

Unless you’re from Newfoundland, or a fan of Newfie comedy you surely don’t get that reference or know who Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers are. Either way, check out the video at the bottom of this post for a good laugh :-).

This particular ‘Vette is really nothing like Buddy’s, but we did have a few laughs of out own while out shooting this car. Between a guy yelling profanities about “toilet people” and death threats at us, and a visit from the police it was an interesting shoot to say the least.

One of the harder things about shooting cars is often finding just the right location and time to shoot. But for this 2005 Corvette, the client wanted just a simple black background, which meant the location wasn’t as important. I knew I’d be extracting the car later in Photoshop so I just needed as simple of a background as I could find to make post production as painless as possible.

There was only one little problem: a recently installed lighting kit is a key feature of the car, so I had to include that. I knew extracting the glow from the lighting in Photoshop would be a nightmare, so I had to find a parking lot with some nice black pavement. Luckily we found a parking lot downtown that had just been resurfaced and had a nice plain grey brick wall to shoot in front of.

This of course is where the guy yelling about how he was going to kill the “toilet people” (I believe that was us) comes in. Luckily he kept his distance, and the nearby neighbours yelling at him to shut up seemed to indicate they knew who he was. Eventually, someone called the police, however they called them on us. We had a good laugh with them about that and pointed them to the real culprit lurking in the bushes. Not sure if they ever go their hands on him or not, but I’m pretty sure he was harmless anyway. Unless you’re a toilet person, then watch your back!

Now for that laugh (for those not fluent in Newfie, see the transcript here).
